This photo of Martin Hanson was taken on June 6, 2008 as he waited patiently for a voyage to Sand Island to inspect Plenty Charm, which had just become one of the likely prospects for restoration by the Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Martin died in his home at the age of 81 in October.

To say that he will be missed is a gross understatement.

His quiet accomplishments and efforts to raise awareness and appreciation for wilderness, wild things, and natural resources are legendary.

Would the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore be in existence without the dogged determination of Martin Hanson? Perhaps. But when one looks at his influence upon Senator Gaylord Nelson, one wonders how long it might have taken without the persistence of Martin Hanson.

Martin Hanson and the "Friends"

A leading founder of FAINL, Martin never missed a Board Meeting. He was mostly quiet - but when he spoke, the rest of us listened. With respect.

Jewels on the Water - Lake Superior's Apostle Islands is without question the finest coffee table size resource published on the Islands.

The publisher of record is the Friends. But if one looks at the small print, the funding of the project becomes evident.

Photographer Layne Kennedy, in his Acknowledgments wrote: "And to Martin Hanson, whose generous support and vision made this book a reality. His purpose in providing education and his support in keeping the Apostle Islands a recognized national treasure are immeasurable."

Just a Small Number Left

Martin gave the Friends several hundred copies of Jewels on the Water - Lake Superior's Apostle Islands to raise funds for FAINL projects.

Less than 150 books are left, and at this point there are no plans to have the book reprinted.

A wonderful way to show friends and business associates why you love the Islands is to give them a copy of Jewels on the Water.

You may buy the book on line, or send a check in the amount of $35.00 to Friends, PO Box 1574, Bayfield, WI 54814

A Reminder From Ruth Goetz

It is that time of year to renew your Friends Membership.

We greatly appreciate your support of our efforts within the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore!

Plenty Charm???

Back in June Friends of the Apostle Islands announced that it had selected to rehabilitate a place called Plenty Charm as their first Legacy Project.

What has happened since?

First, the announcement resulted in a considerable number of new members - and designated donations - from individuals interested in the preservation of buildings on Sand Island.

Members of the Friends Board visited the site, and a committee was selected to meet monthly on project details. Then a smaller sub-committee was named to work with Park Service staff. And finally a general contractor, KBK of Ashland visited the site to determine what needed to be done to restore and preserve the building.

We have learned one sure thing: the details of taking on a Legacy Project absorb a huge amount of time, and for those involved, considerable patience.

We will keep Friends Members informed as we continue to discuss our options with Plenty Charm.

Updated Projects

During our early years, as the Friends Board selected projects for a coming year, it was done with the notion that if good projects were announced, somehow the contributions would come in, and promises made would be fulfilled.

It was a notion that all too often brought great anxiety when the "somehow" did not work as planned.

So here is our "two step" new way of selecting projects.

1. Pick a small number projects where funding is needed, and that we have every reason to expect we can fund successfully.

2. Select projects we want to fund, Plenty Charm or another Legacy Project for example, solicit contributions, and only when a project can be paid for, commit to it.

Funded  Projects for 2009 are:

1.  Publish National Lakeshore Newsletter
2.  Fund "Around the Archipelago" Lecture Series
3.
Match Designated Donations for Island campsite bear boxes

Selected Project: Our first Legacy Restoration & Preservation Project

Designated Donations are always welcome for both Selected & Funded Projects.

An Extended Pension Protection Act offers a tax break for retirees donating IRA assets to qualified charitable organizations like Friends of the Apostle Islands .

Martin Hanson Endowment Fund - 12/10/08 Press Release

Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (Friends) are pleased to announce that, due to the generosity of an anonymous donor, an Endowment Fund has been established in memory of the late Martin Hanson of Mellen, Wisconsin. Martin was a locally known, and nationally recognized conservationist. His vision and tireless efforts helped, amongst other things, establish the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Income from the Endowment will benefit Friends, whose mission is "to promote an appreciation for and preservation of the cultural and natural heritage and the natural environment of the Apostle Islands." Establishment of the Martin Hanson Conservation Endowment Fund was a fitting way to remember his legacy, his love of the Lakeshore and its future.

Over the years Friends has underwritten a number of educational projects and resource protection efforts that have benefited the National Lakeshore. Please visit  www.friendsoftheapostleislands.org for more information concerning our past activities.

The Martin Hanson Conservation Endowment will be managed by the Duluth Superior Community Foundation and its affiliate the Apostle Islands Area Community Fund.

Lois Albrecht, Donor Services Officer stated "we are pleased to promote this endowment, which will support Friend’s long-term efforts."

Tax deductible contributions of various types can be made, in any amount, at any time.

Those wishing to contribute to the Endowment should contact Ms Albrecht at PO Box 332, Bayfield, WI 54814, by phone at 715 779 7021 or via e-mail aiacf@centurytel.net.

Alternatively, donations made directly to Friends, marked "in Memory of Martin Hanson," have helped us with our near-term endeavors.

Anyone interested in making a memorial donation can send their tax deductible gift to the Friends of the Apostle Islands, PO Box 1574, Bayfield, WI 54814.

For further information contact Bob Dunne, Friends Treasurer at 715 682 0111 or via email dunnes@centurytel.net.

Friends is planning a “Tribute to Martin” event at 5pm, Saturday June 27, 2009 at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland. Further information will be provided as the date approaches.
