Lake Superior water level was a big issue last year. But this year "Our Lake" is on the way up again.

Lake Superior rose 6 inches in April, double the usual increase for the month, and is closest to its monthly average than any time since July 2006.

Superior is now 8 inches below normal but is a wonderful 10 inches above the level on May 1 last year. Over the past two years the lake had been as much as 22 inches below long-term monthly averages.

Here is another Bayfield Harbor Web Cam from Kerr Studio & Gallery - a bit slow to load, but worth the wait.

Rebuilding of the Bayfield City Dock appears to be on schedule.

And with this newsletter, the Friends announce their first Legacy Project.

Our Blog

The Friends Blog - click here to view it - made its arrival at the end of March. Since then many of you have taken a look at it, several made comments, more sent an email to your editor.

A common request was for the blog image to be a bit more "Apostle Islands" looking than the image of an unknown coastline.

So the image was changed to a portion of the photo that appears to the right. And a page - On the shore of an island - added to the blog.

It is easy to add your comments to what appears on the blog, and a wonderful way to share your special interests with other Friends Members.

More about that a bit later in this newsletter.

On a Legacy Project and Serendipity

At the same time the Friends Board was deliberating on a choice of our first Legacy Project we learned that one of our members, Bob Mackreth, was about to have an article published in Lake Superior Magazine.

If you are not a subscriber of Lake Superior Magazine, you should be.

The article "Gert's Getaway" appears in the June - July issue. It is a story about Sand Island, a woman named Gert & her friends, and a place called Plenty Charm.

And this is where serendipity comes in.

The Friends first Legacy Project is a place called Plenty Charm.

It was a ranger station in the 1970s. Then used for the Park's Artist In Residence Program. Now used for nothing and begging to be restored.

Friends of the Apostle Islands have selected to rehabilitate Plenty Charm for the benefit of the National Lakeshore, its visitors, and posterity.

Plenty Charm deserves to be again what it once was - a place for Artists In Residence.

Please go to the Friends Blog for an article on Plenty Charm.

Special Interest Groups

Member posts to our blog & emails have indicated desires to become a part of group that shares a particular interest.

Here are three obvious groups to begin with.

1. Boaters - sail & power
2. Kayakers & campers
3. Preservation of cultural & natural heritage

The opportunity to join one or more of these groups (or to start an additional group) is available now on the Friends Blog.
