They were asked to use a single word to describe the achievements of the Friends during the 2006 season.

This is what we heard:

"Wonderful!"
Ruth Goetz, President of the Friends

"Thrilling!"
Bob Krumenaker, Superintendent of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Our Book: "Jewels on the Water"

Sales of the book "Jewels on the Water,"  have been going very well - good news for the Friends because it is a source of income for projects present and future.

Of course everyone reading this has at least one copy of "Jewels on the Water!"   . . .

But believe it or not, that major gift giving time called Christmas is indeed very near,  and for that sailor, wilderness lover or photo buff individual on your shopping list "Jewels on the Water,"  will make one very impressive gift.

To do your shopping online, just visit the friends website.

Thank you!

A  Conversation With Bob Krumenaker

A new bulletin board at the Meyers Beach Trailhead.

A Park Ranger on duty 7 days a week at Meyers Beach to assist kayakers.

The Guest Lecture Series.

Thousands of Park Newsletters.

The purchase of glass for the Chequamegon Point Light lens room, part of the restoration of one of the smaller lighthouses of the Apostle Islands, that will be completed in 2007.

The Voluntary Passport Program that went a long way toward easing the news of next years user fees.

Five volunteer work projects on the Islands that gave Park staff and volunteers an opportunity to interact.

These are some of the things that caused Bob to say, "I'm just thrilled with the results of what the Friends have accomplished."

Without Friends assistance, The Twine Shed at Hokenson Fish Camp has been raised and a new foundation and floor is being built. And the Michigan Island Lighthouse has been repainted.

Best news of all? The Raspberry Lighthouse will have its "grand reopening" next June.

$

Dues? Yep, Dues

We need to visit a bit about dues. It is a bottom line kind of thing. Without money, every good intention will suffer.

The Board of Directors is actively pursuing grants, corporate gifts and the like.

But the core of the Friends organization will always be individual, tax free, contributions.

Contributions from people who love the Apostle Islands not only for what they are, but for what they can be.

As 2006 becomes 2007 the Friends need your money.

Thank you!

  A Note from Ruth Goetz

"Many thanks to the individual members of the Friends whose contributions made the achievements of this year possible, to our Board of Directors for their devotion to our cause, and to Park Service staff for their support!

It is a pleasure to work with all of you!

The Annual Meeting of Friends of the Apostle Islands on August 6 at Big Top Chautauqua, in conjunction with our sponsorship of "Riding The Wind" that night, was a wonderful time. We will do it again!

Another year is about to begin, bringing with it more opportunities to continue our efforts to enhance the experience of all visitors, from boaters to sightseers, of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Maybe we can double our membership again next year?"
