Friends of The Apostle Islands Support the Nomination of a Greater Chequamegon Bay National Marine Sanctuary
Our board unanimously voted to support the nomination of a national marine sanctuary (NMS) that would surround the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and if designated would be the first and only US national marine sanctuary on Lake Superior.
The NMS system is administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). We believe this area is worthy of NOAA’s national marine sanctuary system and we could use their help in acting as responsible stewards now and for future generations. The National Park Service protects and preserves the archipelago of 21 Apostle Islands, and a stretch of mainland shoreline, but only a small portion of the marine habitat that surrounds and so closely interacts with the National Lakeshore's valuable resources.
Through research and education and in collaboration with the tribes, DNR and local governments, we feel we’d all benefit from a better understanding of our area’s marine resources, and together, promote a proactive ecosystem-wide approach to lake protection. Check out both of our letters of support (http://www.nps.gov/apis/learn/current-park-issues.htm) and find more information on the National Marine Sanctuary (http://www.lakesuperiorsanctuary.org/) initiative.
Good News! Giving a Voice to Water: Grant Funds Field Trips for 4th Graders
Thanks to the pending nomination of a national marine sanctuary and a partnership with the APIS National Lakeshore, FAINL was one of fourteen awardees (out of 127 applicants) to receive a National Marine Sanctuary Foundation grant for $12,521. The funds will pay for bus and boat transportation for seven coastal community school 4th grade classes in spring and fall 2016, and spring 2017. Together we will provide a once-in-a-lifetime field trip for 275 4th graders from coastal communities on Lake Superior to discover the APIS National Lakeshore and decide what makes this area so significant that it may be considered for nomination as a National Marine Sanctuary. This is significant since no participating elementary school 4th grade class has ever visited the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Through this field trip and follow-up activities, participants will gain insight into what it means to be good stewards of our national resources.

Real Time Wave Sensor at Sea Caves to be Updated and Improved
Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Professor of Environmental Engineering Chin Wu at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and funds from Wisconsin Coastal Management and your contributions to FAINL, we were able to secure the necessary funds to update the system and continue to provide wave and ice conditions online for paddlers and hikers.

Volunteer Opportunities

Do You Like to Garden? Better yet, on Michigan Island?
We are looking for volunteers in mid-May to early June to help the park service prepare and plant the historic flowerbeds at the Michigan Island light station in preparation for Centennial Events this summer. Elizabeth Lang, lighthouse keeper’s wife for 35 years set the bar back in 1902. The park service will transport us and FAINL is helping to plan and buy the plants. We have to be somewhat flexible with the timing dependent on weather and spring conditions.

Like to Garden But Cannot Get Away for a Day?
Consider helping us to improve the Gaylord Nelson Garden in front of the Park headquarters sign in Bayfield. FAINL will be sponsoring a garden social this spring. As a volunteer you will learn how to identify, plan and transplant local native plants.
How Do I Volunteer? Please get in touch with Erica at petersonerica05@gmail.com (mailto:petersonerica05@gmail.com)
and indicate your availability and best contact information.

Want to Be Involved but Cannot Volunteer?
Gift the Park at a Birthday Celebration
In this Centennial Year of the NPS, please consider having a birthday party or other celebration and in lieu of gifts, ask guests to instead gift the park with a special donation to FAINL. We will send them a ‘Thank You” and a one-year subscription to FAINL newsletters.

Consider Purchasing a Brick or Image for the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Mural
Sue Martinsen is truly painting a masterpiece for our upcoming Centennial Event on June 25th. Local school children from Ashland Charter School helped paint water, sky, and rock in landscapes that are coming to life on her giant 12X44 foot mural. Images and bricks are for sale. Consider adding your name, family’s name, or business on this mural, which will become one of over 25 in Ashland’s mural walk. Calling All Paddlers or Would-Be Paddlers

Paddling Book Written by “Friends” Supporter, John Frank

Some would argue that the best way to experience the Islands is with a paddle in your hands and a sea kayak between you and the water. John Frank’s book “Apostle Islands Water Trips” makes it possible with personal and interpretive stories supported by 25 years of paddling know-how. His inspiring narration shares mileages, camping spots, shoreline landings, maps with points of interest and trails, and even food ideas. Anyone who has paddled to the islands will find both humor and useful advice in what he has to say.
Books can be purchased on the FRIENDS website (http://www.friendsoftheapostleislands.org/apostle-islands-water-trips.html) .

John, indebted to the National Lakeshore for the natural beauty, escape and solitude of the islands, is donating his royalties to “Friends.” Please support us by buying and promoting his book. Thank you John. Want to help promote it? Consider Writing A Review on Amazon.com

Are You Missing the Sounds of Summer?
How many of you paddlers can recall the sounds of water in a sea cave. Paulette Moore, a media-maker-in-residence at Northland College, recently completed an 8-minute audio project featuring sounds from the Apostle Islands sea caves.
